Facing circumstance that the supply is higher than demand, from January 5, the Ministry of Construction sent documents to People's Committees of provinces and cities to stop granting investment registration licence for cement projects from now till 2020.

Till the end of 2009, Vietnam invested in 97 cement production lines with designed capacity of 57.4 million tonnes.

As planned, in 2010, there will be more 13 cement production lines being put into operation with a designed capacity of 11.7 million tonnes, higher than domestic demand about two million tonnes. The figure will be 12 production lines in 2011, providing 9/35 million tonnes of cement, seven lines in 2012 with 6.72 million tonnes and another seven lines in 2015.

Hence, in 2010, the total cement output could reach 102 million tonnes; higher than domestic demand about seven million tonnes of cement.

In November 2009, the Ministry of Construction reported prime minister in statement to stop approving cement investment projects from now till 2020 to ensure stable and sustainable development.
