Beer and other alcoholic drinks will face a special consumption tax of 45 percent until the end of 2012, the general Department of Taxation has said.

According to a note sent by the department recently to city and province authorities, beer and spirits higher than 40 proof will be taxed 45 percent during the period and 50 percent afterwards, newswire Vnexpress said Monday. Wine less than 40 proof will be taxed 25 percent.

Wine less than 40 proof has previously been taxed 20 percent, while stronger drinks have been taxed 30-65 percent.

Beer was taxed 30 percent in 2006-2007 and 40-75 percent in 2008-2009.

Under the new rates, the price of canned beer on which the tax is based will be 3,800 dong (US$0.21) cheaper per litre than retail rates.
