Police to send investigators to Thailand over slaying
26-AUG-2008 Intellasia | Kyodo
Aug 26, 2008 - 7:00:00 AM
Police have decided to send investigators to Thailand over the case of a missing Japanese man suspected of having been killed there by compatriots.

Thai police have obtained arrest warrants for two Japanese men suspected of murdering Takahide Tanahashi, 33, a native of Gifu Prefecture who went missing from his Bangkok apartment August 5.

A body presumed to be that of Tanahashi was found in a Thai national park, while the two suspects have already returned to Japan.

Because Japan and Thailand do not have an extradition treaty, the Gifu Prefectural Police is planning to hold consultations with Thai police regarding cooperation in investigating the case.

The Gifu police have questioned one of the two men, Hirotoshi Mori, 30, of Aichi Prefecture.

Cash was withdrawn from Tanahashi's bank accounts in Bangkok and Nagoya. Mori has admitted to withdrawing cash, according to the police. He reportedly said he did this at the request of the other suspect, who has been identified as Takeshi Urakami, 31, of Osaka Prefecture. Mori said he handed the cash to Urakami.

A book by Tanahashi on how to enjoy the easy life overseas was published last month. He had made his living in Thailand by online stock trading, according to Thai police.
