Taiwan's top PC memory chip maker, plans to allocate up to T$11 billion for capital spending this year, a company official said on Wednesday, as it moves to upgrade technology.
The official, who declined to be identified, confirmed a local newspaper report on the figure but gave no other details.
Powerchip, which had almost no budget for spending last year during the sector's slump, would use this year's capex mainly for upgrading its technology to 40 nanometers, which helps boost efficiency, the Commercial Times said on Wednesday.
Major DRAM makers in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan have returned to profits recently as chip prices have rebounded and PC demand has grown. However, some industry watchers say industry-wide spending on new technology could cause a supply glut again.
Nanya Technology <2408.TW> has said it would hire 250 new staff this year, mostly engineers, and its capital spending for this year is T$19 billion.
