Philippine unemployment rate eases to 7.3pct in January

The Philippines' unemployment rate eased to 7.3 per in January from 7.7 percent a year ago as the economy slowly showed signs of recovery, the government said Tuesday. The National Statistics Office (NSO) said the number of unemployed people went down to 2.82 million in January 2010 from 2.85 million a year ago.

The agency noted, however, that the number of underemployed people or those working less than 40 hours per week jumped to 7.10 million from 6.23 million a year ago.

The number of employed people was recorded at 35.99 million up from 34.26 million a year ago.
