A martial arts instructor Tuesday disarmed a drug dealer who had taken a six-year-old girl hostage in Da Nang City, allowing police to arrest the criminal.
Tran Van Cu received close to the bandit, Nguyen Duy Khanh, and his hostage by pretending to be a xe om (motorbike) driver.
When Khanh was within range, Cu wrestled a knife out of his hands, allowing police to capture the crook.
Khanh had been arrested by Ngu Hanh Son District police on Monday evening for allegedly dealing, storing and using drugs.
The 22-year-old escaped from custody during the night, stealing a 40 centimetre knife from a nearby house.
Police spotted Khanh early Tuesday and started to chase him.
Khanh broke into the home of six-year-old Nguyen Thi Hoang My and took her hostage.
Fifty-five-year-old Cu, who lives next door to My, joined the chase.
"When I rode my motorbike near Khanh, he threatened that he would kill me if I tried to come any closer to the girl," Cu said.
"I replied that I'm just a rider and I'd help him run away if he paid me."
Cu disarmed Khanh as the criminal was trying to get onto the motorbike with his hostage.
"I just thought about how to rescue the girl from danger. It's what anyone would do, not just a martial arts instructor," said Cu, whose hand was injured during the daring rescue.
Ngu Hanh Son District police chief Nguyen Viet Loi said Cu had been rewarded with 300,000 dong (US$18) after Khanh's arrest.
