US man jailed for sexual abuse of Cambodian girls

A Cambodian court sentenced a US citizen Wednesday to two-and-a-half years in prison for sexually molesting two girls.

A Phnom Penh municipal court sentenced Thomas Wayne Rapanos, 55, after convicting him at his July 17 trial of molesting the girls, ages 12 and 16.

He also ordered Rapanos, a resident of the state of Florida, to pay 4 million riel (US$975) in compensation to the girls, as well as a 5 million riel (US$1,220) fine.

Police arrested Rapanos in March during a raid on his guesthouse room in the capital of Phnom Penh, where they found him in the company of the girls.

"I am 100% innocent," Rapanos told reporters after he was sentenced.

His Cambodian lawyer, Khy Bun Trean, called the verdict unfair and said he would talk to his client about filing an appeal.
