Ministry studies workers' demand for low-income housing

The Ministry of Construction has recently asked local authorities to report workers' demand for housing in industrial parks, economic zones and export processing zones.
The ministry is drafting a project to develop affordable housing for workers and expects to deliver the plan to the government for consideration in the third quarter of this year.
In a dispatch sent to provincial and municipal People's Committees, the ministry said it needed to compile the number of employees working in larger than 50-hectare economic zones, industrial parks and export processing zones in 2007, and projected worker estimates for 2015 and 2020.
Local governments are required to report the estimated figure of workers who needed accommodation in 2007, and for 2015 and 2020, along with investors' ability to meet this demand.
The ministry also requested local authorities to report areas designated for low-income housing for workers and submit proposals to invest in affordable housing.
According to the ministry's estimation, around 350,000 of 2.2 million workers in industrial zones nationwide have difficulty finding accommodation.
