Miss Vietnam 2008 not yet a high-school graduate?
05-SEP-2008 Intellasia | Vietnamnet
Sep 5, 2008 - 7:00:01 AM
Several hours after Tran Thi Thuy Dung was crowned Miss Vietnam 2008, members of online forums gossiped that Thuy Dung was expelled from school and didn't graduate high school.

Surprisingly, in an interview with VTC, a news website, Pham Si Liem, Headmaster of the Quang Trung private high school in the central city of Da Nang, where Thuy Dung studied, said Miss Vietnam 2008 didn't graduate high school.

"When Thuy Dung entered our school, her learning capacity was just normal. But as a private school, we didn't request high learning capacity like public schools or schools for gifted students. While studying here, there was no problem associated with her," the headmaster said.

He also said that as Thuy Dung wished to become a model, she gave up studying starting from the beginning of the second term of the 12th grade.

"We are a private school so Thuy Dung can stop studying. Her absence from school was voluntary. She didn't commit any mistake to be expelled from school," Liem added.

Vietnamnet tried to reach Thuy Dung's father to ask about the case and he said Thuy Dung graduated high school and she has necessary documents for going to the US for study.

"Thuy Dung graduated high school but she didn't take the university entrance exams. Please contact Tien Phong Newspaper (the organiser of Miss Vietnam pageant) for further information," said the father.

Vietnamnet immediately called Duong Xuan Nam, chief organiser and chief jury of the Miss Vietnam 2008 pageant, who was very surprised about the news disclosed by headmaster Pham Si Liem that Thuy Dung didn't graduate high school. "Really? I don't know this information," Nam said.

"You told correspondents several times that the organisers always look into the histories of the five top contestants of the Miss Vietnam pageant. Did you do this job this year?"

"We only looked into the cases of problematic contestants. The case of Thuy Dung was checked by Da Nang," Nam said.

"If headmaster Pham Si Liem's information is correct, how will the organising board deal with this case?"

"Let me check with the representative board of the Miss Vietnam 2008 pageant in the central region!" Nam said.

Graduating or not graduating is not important for a contestant but it is serious if a contestant tricks others. The headmaster of the high school where Thuy Dung studied affirmed she gave up school and didn't graduate, yet Thuy Dung's father said she already has documents for overseas study, which must include a high-school diploma.

So where did Thuy Dung get the diploma?

The organisers can't thoroughly check the information of all contestants but those who enter the final round must be checked. This case must be investigated and made public and if Miss Vietnam 2008 has been dishonest, of course she can't keep the crown.
