Australian murdered in Philippines
09-JAN-2009 Intellasia | AAP
Jan 9, 2009 - 7:00:00 AM
The foreign affairs department says it's providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man murdered in the Philippines.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed the 70-year-old man, reportedly a businessperson who had been living in the Philippines for 12 years, died on January 6.

"The Australian embassy in Manila is providing consular assistance to his family," the DFAT spokesman told AAP.

Philippines police had advised DFAT the man had been stabbed.

Reports from Fairfax media say the Melbourne man's name was Werner Holz, and that three armed robbers stole about US$42,000 in cash and jewellery from his home during the confrontation.

They entered through the back door of the house and fled within an hour, reports say.
