Victims of a police state: foreign aid scandal reporters arrested
Just a few short months after the ten-year drive to join the World Trade organisation ended where progress on 'reform' was a prerequisite by WTO member countries to sign off on Vietnam's entry early last year, the police in Vietnam appear to have been let off their leash mauling all and sundry who had criticised their conduct in the past.
Now the police are persecuting and arresting high-calibre reporters in what some say is a revenge campaign for the coverage of the notorious and most high-profile corruption case in Vietnam—the PMU18 aid scandal two years ago—where millions of dollars of official development money was squandered on football bets by the head of a transport ministry arm.
