Norwegian telco Telenor, which entered the Pakistani market for mobile communication a few weeks ago, reports that 343,000 customers signed up during the first 17 days of operation.
The Norwegian company hopes for a total of 6 million subscribers by 2008.
Telenor now hopes to copy the success in Vietnam.
-We are establishing an office in Vietnam. It is important for us to gain more knowledge about this market, and we are opening negotiations with the authorities, says Telenor CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas to Finansavisen.
-Our exxperience is that we have to be “on location” in order to learn about a market and the operators already in place. Vietnam is a promising market, Baksaas says.
Last March the Vietnamese government opened up for a restructuring of the MobiFone company, turn it into a limited company, and open the sector for private investors.
