Official gives away luxury cars to win favour
The project director of a state motorway construction project under the Ministry of Transport registered 108 luxury cars and gave them away to curry favour, said Hanoi police.
Bui Tien Dung, the director of state road construction project PMU18 who was arrested last month for illegal football betting had the cars registered in his name in Hanoi, said the traffic police department last week.
The PMU18 project was granted top priority in importing cars with zero taxation to serve the project. However, Dung misappropriated the State assets, using them to secure underhanded business relations and avoid taxes.
Police suspect several cars were sold to other companies and agencies registered under the name of the PMU18 project by director Dung to evade tax.
The central investigation police department said they have collected all information concerning specifications, properties and number plates of the cars.
Calculations revealed that duty free imports of the 108 luxurious cars caused losses running into the tens of billions of dong (hundreds of thousands of dollars) to State budget.
Seven out of the 108 cars have already been returned to investigation police.
