Operation Smile helps 500 children

Thirty American professors, doctors and nurses under the programme of Face of Challenge headed by doctor Jerry K. Popham and Barry Steinberg visited HCM City-based Dental hospital on March 19 to have operations for poverty-trapped children born with facial defects.
As scheduled, the programme will work with doctors of HCM City dental hospital through March 19–25 to check and operate for 120 patients from southern Vietnam.
This is the tenth time US doctors and the HCM City dental hospital’s doctors have worked together on cleft palate operations for 500 children born with defects affecting face, nose and mouth, said Dr Nguyen Dai Hai, hospital director. Accompanying the working session, the programme equips the hospital with specialised facilities, which are worth US$100,000.
Given with such contribution, the Vietnam health ministry as requested by the HCM City dental hospital granted merits certificate for doctors Jerry K.Popham and Barry Steinberg and eleven others of the programme. Those doctors also were awarded a HCM City medal.
