Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c44605) has announced the addition of Espicom Business Intelligence’s new report: The Pharmaceutical Market: Vietnam to their offering.
Vietnam’s pharmaceutical market remains chaotic and poorly regulated.
Despite steady market growth and rising per capita consumption in recent years, Vietnam’s pharmaceutical market remains chaotic and poorly regulated, with enforcement of IP, distribution and dispensing laws a major problem. The country has a large number of small manufacturers, which often produce copied drugs of poor quality. The Vietnamese government has produced a compulsory GMP licensing system, although enforcing this appears to be an equally difficult task. For outsiders, trade practices in general are among the most restrictive and bureaucratic in the region.
The market is still worth considering, however. The opening of the economy since the doi moi reforms of the mid-1980s has created a demand for Western drugs which cannot be met by the local industry. Imports, therefore, comprise a significant proportion of the market by value. European suppliers dominate, with the French at the forefront, due to their long historical ties with the region. US manufacturers have only been able to directly supply Vietnam since the lifting of the US government trade boycott in 1994.
The healthcare system in Vietnam is partly funded through a national health insurance scheme, which is compulsory for all industrial workers and government employees. However, the system is far from comprehensive. As of the end of 2003, only 14% of employed people had social insurance and 21% had health insurance.
