Reasons of increasing abortion
Today abortion attracts attention of policy makers on population strategy in Vietnam. However, many questions around reasons leading to abortion on the increase have no answer. According to first statistic figure by a social body, annually Vietnam has over one million abortion cases, about 200,000 of which are among teenagers.
Medical experts defined that abortion was not a solution for family planning. They divided into six reason groups of abortion including personal character, economic situation, social situation, living environment, sexual behaviour and contraceptive methods.
After analysing collected data, researchers affirm that the rate of unexpectedly pregnant teenagers for not use contraceptive solutions is on the rise. Especially, most men in different age groups do not want to use condoms when having sexual intercourse. And women using contraceptive device depend on knowledge. The rate of contraception in childless woman group is lower than woman who had children.
Especially, males and females, who do not enjoy sexual satisfaction, are listed in unsafe sexual intercourse and easily unexpectedly pregnant. In fact, many women decided to abort through very complicated internal fight.
In many obstetric hospitals in urban areas throughout country, everyday doctors have to solve hundreds of abortion cases for unexpected pregnancy. In a year, the rate of births hits 1,138,607 cases and abortion figure also reaches 934,302.
Tu Du hospital of HCM City estimated that annually there were over 4,000 abortions here. In 1999, World Health Organisation WHO warned and ranked Vietnam into the five-country-group which had the highest abortion rate in the world.
Unwanted pregnancies are the most basic reason leading to abortion. This is a true in the country as well as in the world. Over 50% of married women at maternity age want to delay or stop bearing. In many places, especially rural and remote areas, many women flinch from using contraceptive device.
Other women do not have another child for many reasons such as psychological contradiction, unawareness of contraceptive method, disagreement of family, and difficult access to modern contraception services. In addition, some of women think that it’s difficult for them to be pregnant through sexual intercourse at the first time or as breast-feeding the baby.
Some recent surveys seek woman’s views on premarital sex. Surprisingly, over 60% of them said they did not like using any contraceptive method though they also did not want to become pregnant.
Meanwhile, 1,001 reasons still exist in Asian people’s mind such as weak health, fear of social criticism, and so on. About 68% surveyed said that abortion was for economic disadvantage or poverty and hunger. This is the most important one.
For a long time, the Asian people in general and Vietnamese in particular esteem male chauvinism. Gender choice contributed in the increase of abortion in Asian women. This belongs to social morality.
Finally, the reason of abortion usually relates closely to economic-social conditions and demography. Knowledge level influences abortion not much.
