Asean?s countries say they will coordinate to raise the rate of renewable energy by 10% of power generated in each country. This target was announced after the first conference of the Forum for Southeast Asia Electricity Representatives of Group 4 on renewable energy and the environment held in Hanoi on June 23 and 24.
Pham Khanh Toan head of Vietnam Institute of Energy (under Electricity of Vietnam) said although the subject of renewable energy has received support from many international organisations such as the WB, and Japan?s aid agency, Jica, 30 years ago, renewable energy now only accounts for 2% of Vietnam?s power generation capacity. To achieve the 10% target, renewable energy projects such as wind power, geothermic power, tidal power, solar power, and small hydroelectric plant, which are being implemented would need much more support from the government because the cost for producing such eco-friendly energy is relatively expensive.
