A man suspected initially of being infected with the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has recovered, a top health official said Friday December 16 in central Vietnam.
Specimens taken from the 27-year-old man, a resident of Quang Nam province’s Nui Thanh district, had been sent to a central lab for testing, Duong Van Nghia, director of the province’s health department said.
The man, who was from a bird flu-struck area, had been hospitalised for four days with high fever and severe cough, he said.
However, Nghia said, he was sure by now that the man was not infected by H5N1, the strain that has infected 92 people in Vietnam, 42 of them fatally.
Vietnamese health authorities said Thursday a three-year-old boy who died earlier this week had had a lung infection and not the H5N1 bird flu virus as previously suspected.
