Sugar shortage forecast in 2006
Sugar production may fall short by between 150,000 and 200,000 tonnes in 2006 due to a shortage of sugarcane, experts have predicted. The agriculture ministry (Mard) said sugar makers might be able to refine just one million tonnes of products against the demand of around 1.2 million tonnes.
Signs of an insufficient supply of sugarcane had emerged, making sugar refineries capable of meeting just 70-80% of this year’s targets, said Mard officials.
In early December, the wholesale price of sugar increased by 200 dong per kilogram and is expected to be on the rise with the approach of the lunar New Year festival, the season of sweets, said Mard sources.
