A shortfall of about 50,000 tonnes of sugar this year is likely since total

domestic refined sugar is about one million of tonnes tops, the Ministry of

Industry reported.

The price of sugarcane at present is 30-35% higher than that of last year

sometimes reaching 45-55% higher. Many sugar refineries have already used up to

60-70% of their capacity. As a result, the price of sugar in Vietnam may rise to

US$400 a tonne, equal to 6,000-6,200 dong a kilogramme.
