Taiwan December unemployment rate down to 4.67pct

Taiwan had 520,000 unemployed in December 2010, equivalent to an unemployment rate of 4.67 percent which decreased by 0.06 percentage point on month and by 1.07 percentage points on year, according to statistics released by the directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) on January 24.

Taiwan’s population aged 15 and over stood at 19.153 million in December, consisting of 11.133 million for labour force and 8.020 million for non-labour force with a labour participation rate of 58.13 percent, DGBAS indicated.

In December, Taiwan’s unemployment rate was lower than the 9.4 percent in the US, 7.9 percent in UK, 7.6 percent in Canada, 7.2 percent in Germany, 5.1 percent in Japan but higher than the 4.0 percent in Hong Kong, 3.6 percent in South Korea and 2.1 percent in Singapore, DGBAS pointed out.

The average unemployment rate for the whole year of 2010 was 5.21 percent, dropping by 0.64 percentage point from 2009, DGBAS noted.
