Taiwan, Malaysia work to deepen ties

Taiwan and Malaysia are set to deepen ties in agriculture, trade and technology, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.

Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-Shiang led a delegation to Kuala Lumpur for bilateral talks from Wednesday to yesterday, eight years since the last such talks were held.

Both sides hope to increase bilateral investments by small and medium enterprises, and ­cooperate in developing radio frequency identification and electronic certificates of origin, the ministry said in a statement, adding that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on agriculture was in the works.

Meeting with his Malaysian counterpart — minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Sri Mustapa Mohamed — Shih also expressed hope that Taiwanese will be granted visa-free entry to Malaysia in the not-too-distant future.

At the talks, an MOU was signed between the Institute for Information Industry and Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corp, indicating they will work more closely in the field of technology.

Shih also informed his Malaysian hosts that Taiwan is working to sign an economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China, which he said covers traded goods and services, intellectual property rights protection and measures to boost investment.
