The first shipment of plantation timber from the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin, will set sail for south China and Vietnam September 11. The 10,000 tonne shipment is being exported as part of the Tiwi Forestry Project between the Tiwi Island Land Council and the Sylvatech Co.

At its full potential, the project will result in annual exports of 200,000 tonnes. About $1.5 million a year in rent and royalties will be paid to the Tiwi people.

A 5,000 hectare plantation has been developed on Melville Island, which is one sixth of the total area to be developed.
