Unemployment rate drops in March

Malaysia’s unemployment rate declined in March after rising in the previous month, data released by the Department of Statistics showed Monday.

The unemployment rate, on an unadjusted basis, decreased to 2.9 percent in March from 3.2 percent in February. In January, the jobless rate was 3 percent. The number of unemployed persons decreased to around 380,400 in March from about 402,200 in February.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, Malaysia’s unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the month, down from 2.9 percent recorded in February.

At the same time, the number of employed persons in the country increased to around 12.55 million in March from about 12.33 million in the previous month. The labour force participation rate was 65.3 percent in March, up from the previous month’s rate of 64.5 percent.
