Viet-Laos Electrical Development Joint Stock Co will reportedly build and operate five hydropower plants in the Laotian southern province of Sekong if the Lao government agrees to this scheme. These power plants are Sepian Senamnoi with capacity of 340MW; Sekamang 1 with 300MW capacity; Sekamang 4 with 55MW capacity; Sekong 4 with 310MW capacity; and Sekong 5 with 200MW capacity.

Most of the electricity generated from these five plants will be transmitted back to Vietnam via the country’s North-South 500 KV electrical line and mainly supplied to the central region.

Currently, specific information about investment as well as capital sources have not yet been released. Nevertheless, energy experts estimate that construction of these five power plants will cost more than US$1 billion. Viet-Laos Electrical Development Joint Stock Co is a group of six electricity and construction corporations of Vietnam— Song Da Corp, Vietnam Electricity Corp, Civil Engineering Construction Corp (CIENCO) 5 and 8, City and Industrial Zone Investment Development Corp, Central Construction Corp. Viet-Lao PID has a chartered capital of 1.08 trillion dong with 60% held by Song Da Corp..
