US$28m to help SMEs save energy

The Ministry of Science and Technology has just announced a US$28 million project coded Vie/01/G41 to finance small and mid-sized enterprises to save on energy in their manufacture.
Head of Science and Technology Department Pham Huu Giuc said at the seminar on the project on October12 that aim of the project is to help small-and mid-sized enterprises cut down o production cost, reduce product price, and increase competitiveness.
These enterprises would be funded to send employees to training programmes of engineering, technical applications, management, and energy utilisation.
The project will benefit enterprises in five industries: brick and tile manufacturing, terra cotta and porcelain, paper and pulp, garment, and food processing. These are industries considered to be able to save on a great deal of energy, said Giuc.
The project will be carried out from 2005 unit 2009. It is funded by Global Environment Fund (GEF), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the government, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam, together with some other local and overseas organisations.
It is estimated that the project will approach about 500 enterprises in ten provinces. These provinces are Hanoi, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Da Nang, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, HCM City and Can Tho. Entrepreneurs concerned can contact the provincial Development Assistance Fund, the Environment Preservation Fund, or the Science and Technology Fund.
