The government said it will spend 460 billion dong (US$29 million) in lead and zinc mining projects from now to 2020, including a new modern zinc refinery with a capacity of 15,000-20,000 tonnes per year.
The master plan for exploring, mining, processing and using lead and zinc ore in the 2006-15 period, recently approved by the prime minister, clearly specified areas for lead and zinc ore exploration and mining, most of them are located in northern provinces.
Of the budget, 64 billion dong (US$4 million) will be allocated for exploring lead and zinc mines.
It is expected that demand for lead in the 2005-20 period is 17,000-45,000 tonnes, and demand for zinc is about 50,000-165,000 tonnes.
