Vietnam has asked Taiwan to immediately stop building a runway in the disputed Spratly Islands, the foreign ministry said, saying the work violated Vietnamese sovereignty.
“Taiwan will have to take full responsibility for any consequences of its actions,” ministry spokesman Le Dung said, referring to the alleged activity on the island known as Ba Binh in Vietnamese and Taiping in Mandarin.
The foreign ministry did not say when it had first detected the Taiwanese construction work.
Dung described the building of the runway as a “severe violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty” and said it would have a negative impact on peace, stability and the trend towards increased cooperation in the region.
Vietnam, Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan claim all or part of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
