Vietnam has deported a South Korean activist who was detained this month for helping North Korean refugees pass through the South-east Asian nation, the foreign ministry said on Friday.

The 51-year-old man identified only as Yoo arrived in Seoul on Friday, the ministry said, adding he was banned from from re-entering Vietnam.

Yoo was detained by intelligence officials on June 20 at a hotel in Ho Chi Minh, Yonhap news agency said.

He is suspected of helping North Korean defectors enter South Korea via Vietnam, an activity that led to his deportation once before in 2004, it said.
