Vietnam Reviews International Economic Integration

Prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung on August 14 in Hanoi presided over a national conference to review the implementation of two important resolutions to facilitate national economic development after the country joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO)

On the agenda are Resolution 08-NQ/TW, which provided major guidelines and policies for rapid and sustainable economic development in Vietnam after it became a member of the WTO and Resolution 16/2007/NQ-CP, which guides the implementation of Resolution 08-NQ/TW.

Comprehensive assessments of the implementation of the two resolutions are needed now as the country has been in the WTO for five year so as orientations for the country’s economic integration in the next period can be put forth.

Addressing the event, PM Dung said that Vietnam would build up an increasingly independent economy while deeply integrating into the global market and realising the cocio-economic development strategy for the 2011-2020 period.

He confirmed that Vietnam is a good friend, reliable partner and responsible member in the international community and always works to maintain peace, stability and favourable conditions for national development.

According to PM Dung, the country has joined regional and global value chains, beefed up market expansion and shifted its growth model. It has fulfilled WTO commitments and has integrated deeply in Asean towards the formation of the Asean Economic Community by 2015.

In addition, the country is positively engaging in negotiations or about to negotiate for some significant free trade agreements with major partners including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

PM Dung recommended conference participants discuss frankly to point out both achievements and weaknesses in conducting Resolution 08 to draw lessons for the implementation of other resolutions./.
