From May 1 to 17, 2012, Vietnam has exported 409,500 tonnes of rice, lifting the total volume of rice export from early this year so far to 2.167 million tonnes, according to the local newswire Bao Cong Thuong (Newspaper of Industry and Trade).

The country targets to export 3-3.5 million tonnes of rice in the first six months of this year. This means that Vietnam will have to export additional more than one million tonnes of rice in the last half of May and June 2012.

According to Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Vietnam’s rice export in 2012 has started relatively slowly. In January 2012, the country exported only 280,000 tonnes of rice and it was 348,000 tonnes in February. However, the rice exports have increased steadily since March 2012 with 460,000 tonnes, especially surging sharply 45 percent in April 2012 with 671,000 tonnes.

But, the rice export price in May declined to only $434 per tonne (FOB price) against the average level of the year at $473 per tonne (FOB price).
