A woman has ended up in hospital after receiving 100 lashes during a public canning in Indonesia.

The 30-year-old woman, Mazidah, had been found guilty of adultery by a sharia court after being charged with being in a private place in the presence of a man she was not married to.

The 34-year-old man she was with also received 100 lashes, however he did not need hospital treatment.

The public caning took place in the city of Lhokseumawe, south-east of the province’s capital Banda Aceh, reports the ABC.

A third offender, who was accused of indecent behaviour against a minor, was also publicly caned.

The ABC reported the caning had to be stopped at times for each of the three offenders because of their screams.

It is the first time a flogging has taken place in the city since 2006.

However, public canings are on the rise for the province of Aceh.

The Jakarta-based Institute of Criminal Justice Reform has reported they are rising, with 339 known public canings last year.

The province of Aceh is the only place across the Indonesian archipelago where sharia law is in place.

Under the law drinking alcohol, gambling, adultery and homosexuality are among listed crimes.
