World’s eyes on Vietnam’s bird flu efforts
The World Health Organisation (WHO), HCM City’s Pasteur Institute and city and provincial hospitals of Southern Vietnam held a conference of “H5N1 bird flu and measures for infection precaution at hospital †on February 24 at Cho Ray hospital, HCM City.
The WHO said that the world was much looking to Vietnam’s efforts of bird flu prevention and management.
Dr Le Van Tuan, an specialist of the WHO, reported that from December 2003 to February 3, 2005, Vietnam had the highest number of positive H5N1 virus cases and deaths from the fowl epidemic with 44 positive cases and 32 deaths, of which 24 positive and 20 death cases were from Southern Vietnam. Thailand ranks behind Vietnam with 17 positive H5N1 virus cases and 17 deaths.
Dr Tuan said that new strain of type A avian flu in Vietnam has been resilient and versatile; therefore, the danger of its transmission to human is very great.
