The leader of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has proposed that Apple help local firms participate in its supply chain and become supporting industry enterprises within its ecosystem.

Some 30 local firms supply accessories to Apple, which cooperates with 1,200 suppliers in Asia, heard attendees at a meeting between minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung and Rory Sexton, vice president of Asia Procurement and Operations at Apple Inc., on December 4.

Hung noted that Vietnam boasts great potential for the growth of the information technology (IT) and telecommunications sectors, with over 50,000 enterprises and more than one million engineers working in them.

As such, he suggested Apple open doors for Vietnamese firms to cooperate with the American firm.

In response, Sexton stressed that Apple will match and seek cooperation opportunities with local enterprises to expand its production scale in Vietnam.

Sexton also stated that Apple is planning to increase the volume of accessories supplied in Vietnam in the coming years. He expects to regularly meet with the leader of the ministry to update him on Apple’s operations in Vietnam and seek the ministry’s support in removing bottlenecks, such as the shortage of manpower.

Minister Hung remarked that the ministry is willing to support foreign firms active in the IT and telecom sectors in Vietnam, including Apple.
