The country’s top graft buster Azam Baki is suing a journalist for defamation for articles over his alleged purchase of shares and warrants in two public-listed companies.

In a statement, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief’s lawyer, Megat Abdul Munir, said he had filed a claim for defamation against journalist Lalitha Kunaratnam at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

The suit is over two articles published in the Independent News Service (INS) last year.

Azam had previously maintained that he had done nothing wrong.

He also said that his brother used his trading account to purchase shares and warrants in two public-listed companies in 2015 and 2016.

Megat said that Azam’s legal team had sent a letter of demand to Lalitha on January 6 regarding the articles, but alleged that rather than respond officially, she released a statement through her lawyers standing by her work, “the contents of which our client strenuously maintains are defamatory.”

“Our client is therefore constrained to file this suit before the expiry of 14 days from the date of the Letter of Demand to protect his good name, reputation and professional standing.”

He said the suit asserts Azam’s right to necessary and appropriate relief from the courts, and would afford Lalitha the right to defend her claims legally rather than engage in a trial by media.

“Our client will not be making any further statements in relation to this matter and he has full confidence in the Malaysian courts to hear and decide on this matter accordingly.

“Our client wishes to make clear his unwavering commitment that the MACC will always protect all whistleblowers who fall within the ambit of the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010.”

The issue has led to many quarters calling for Azam’s resignation. However, he has defended himself and said only the Yang di-Pertuan Agong could remove him if he sees fit.
