A small demonstration involving Myanmar nationals took place outside the Singapore Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Monday (15 July).

The protest was held in support of several Myanmar nationals who were recently arrested in Singapore, according to a Burma News International report.

Another protest was scheduled to be held outside the Myanmar Embassy in Washington on the same day, while another is set to take place outside the Singapore Embassy in Japan on Wednesday, the report said.

A Ministry of Home Affairs news release on Wednesday said those apprehended in Singapore were gathering support for armed violence against the Myanmar government. They had done so by mobilising members of the local Myanmar community here to back the Arakan Army (AA) and its political wing, the United League of Arakan (ULA).

Twitter posts by the Voice Of Arakan group showed pictures along with a video of men and women gathered along a street outside the Singapore Embassy. Many held signs which were critical of the Singapore and Myanmar governments.

Yahoo News Singapore has reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for more information on the incident.
