The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has proposed the Ministry of Transport approve the zoning adjustments for Phu Quoc and Pleiku airports to increase passenger capacity at both airports and meet the rising demand for air travel and transport.

CAAV noted in the proposal that the zoning adjustments are necessary and should be executed this year to pave the way for further steps, including calling for investments to upgrade and expand the airports.

Regarding Phu Quoc International Airport in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang, 3.2 million passengers traveled through the airport last year, exceeding the designed capacity of 2.65 million passengers per year under the current zoning plan until 2020. In addition, the airport was designed to serve seven million passengers annually by 2030.

Over the past few years, its infrastructure facilities and flight-related services have been upgraded, including the apron, passenger terminals and traffic network, to raise the annual passenger capacity to some four million arrivals.

Also, the prime minister’s Decision No.236, which approved zoning adjustments to develop local air transportation, shows that Phu Quoc airport was approved to increase its passenger capacity to an estimated four million arrivals per year by 2020 and to 10 million arrivals per year by 2030.

As for Pleiku airport in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, CAAV proposed raising the airport’s capacity to four million passengers annually by 2030 to meet the economic growth of the province in particular and the region as a whole.

Under the prevailing zoning plan, Pleiku airport will be expanded to accommodate some 600,000 passengers per year by 2020 and up to one million passengers per year by 2030. However, the province recorded over 720,000 passengers travelling through the airport last year, exceeding the designed capacity. percentE2 percent80 percent99-zoning-adjustments.html
