Chiang Mai Zoo celebrates World Rhino Day

Activities were organised at Chiang Mai Zoo on Sunday to celebrate World Rhino Daywith Kali, a 34-year-old female Indian black rhinoceros from Nepal, the star of the show.

Kali was presented with a large tray bearing an arrangement of her favourite foods, including fresh hay, fresh grass, carot, pumpkin and sweet corn.

A stage was set up for various performances and an exhibition was held to give tourists, particularly children, useful knowledge about rhinos.

Ularik Kongprom, acting assistant director of the Chiang Mai Zoo, said Kalithe only rhino at the zoowas given to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej by the king of Nepal. King Bhumibol then gave it to the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand on April 22, 1986 when it was only one year and two months old, weighing 375 kilogrammes, about 7 feet and 2 inches long and 46.5 inches high.

Kali is now 34 years old, weighs about 2.5 tonnes and stands about 2 metres high.
