A new tropical threat may brew in the Western Pacific Ocean later this week.

While AccuWeather meteorologists are keeping a close eye on other areas across the basin, the one that has the highest probability to develop is churning south and west of Guam.

“This feature will gradually strengthen and could become a depression or tropical storm over the Philippine Sea during the early and middle part of this week,” according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls.

If the storm strengthens, the water across the northern Philippine Sea will turn increasingly rough and dangerous for shipping interests this week. Hazards may then spread to land, depending on the storm’s strength and path.

“There could potentially be impacts from this system later in the week, anywhere from Taiwan to eastern China to southern Japan,” according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk.
