On their part, critics in China are worried about the already high and the continually escalating security costs+ China is bearing for its most ambitious foreign project.

“It is unlikely to be plain sailing for China and Pakistan in their attempts to push forward the CPEC due to challenges such as a complex regional environment, and people in the two countries should be prepared for potential setbacks,” a Chinese state-run newspaper editorial said just a few months ago. State-backed Chinese media often provide hints about the government’s views and are also used to send diplomatic signals and warnings.

Last week, fed up of hearing so much criticism of CPEC, acting Chinese ambassador to Pakistan Zhao Lijian lost his cool on Twitter+ and got into decidedly undiplomatic arguments with Pakistani media and sundry others.

“CPEC is working well. But there are some people who are maligning the project, which enjoys the support of most of the people of Pakistan,” Zhao said.
