A decomposing body was found washed up on a beach at the southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island on Saturday, sparking a police investigation.

A passer-by spotted the corpse, of a man police estimated was in his 30s, on a beach near Lap Sap Wan at Cape D’Aguilar at about 6.40pm, a police spokesman said.

The dead man was of medium build with short black hair. He was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and black trainers.

Officers believed the body had washed ashore.

Wounds were reportedly found on the man’s face and forehead. By midnight it was not known whether his death was suspicious, and police said the cause of death could only be confirmed by an autopsy.
