Chair of the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) Tun Daim Zainuddin is in China in a bid to renegotiate loans and contracts that Putrajaya previously inked with Chinese companies.

Prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed this in the Parliament lobby today.

“What he is trying to do is renegotiate (the deals), we find that they are costly and also part of the money is not really needed,” he added.

Daim, a government advisor, and several officials are currently in China, with a letter from Dr Mahathir.

Asked whether the meeting was productive, he said that Daim has yet to report to him.
