The Department of Construction in Ha Giang Province has asked the provincial government to tear down an illegal seven-story restaurant, called Ma Pi Leng Panorama, built on the slope of Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Six upper stories of the building will be demolished to make room for planting trees, the department said in a report sent to the provincial government on October 8, following its inspection of the building site and a meeting with the relevant agencies.

Further, only a small part of the building will be retained to serve as a tourist rest-stop. The demolition should be completed before November 15.

Also, the provincial government was called on to ask the building’s investor to complete legal procedures for the remaining section of the restaurant within 60 days. Besides this, it should consider addressing the violations of the investor and consult with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism before making a final decision.

The suggested actions were based on the recommendations of UNESCO experts, Nguyen Quang Hung, deputy director of the provincial construction department, told Tuoi Tre Online on October 9.

The seven-story building has a total floor area of nearly 500 square meters and includes areas for sightseeing, covering some 80 square meters.

According to a zoning plan for building the Dong Van karst plateau Geopark, approved by the prime minister in 2017, the building is located in an area where new projects are restricted. In this area, only projects for national defense or crucial tourism and social purposes are allowed, with a maximum of three stories.
