Deputy prime minister Trinh Dinh Dung has said the animal husbandry sector still possesses huge potential as domestic and foreign demand is constantly increasing, especially for high-quality products.

During a conference in Hanoi on September 15 discussing the draft animal husbandry development strategy for the 2020-2030 period with a vision to 2040, Dung asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to continue perfecting the strategy based on feedback from ministries, agencies, and localities, for submission to the government in the near future.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong said Vietnam has made great strides forward in animal husbandry, with annual growth of 4-6 percent in recent years. He added that the sector’s structure is unbalanced, for example pork accounts for as much as 70 percent in the food basket, urging restructuring to suit the demands of the domestic market and exports.

The minister also required the sector to take the lead in adopting circular economy.

Under the draft strategy, production value is to grow 4-5 percent annually during the 2021-2025 period and 3-4 percent during 2026-2030.

Total meat output of various types is projected at 5-5.5 million tonnes by 2025 and 6-6.5 million tonnes by 2030. Up to 15-20 percent of pork is to be exported.

Egg production is targeted at 18-19 billion eggs and milk at 1.7-1.8 million tonnes by 2025 and nearly 23 billion eggs and 2.6 million tonnes of milk by 2030./.
