Sources said authorities will announce details of the Hong Kong health code system on Thursday the soonest.

It is understood an upgraded version of LeaveHomeSafe app will also be introduced for users to sync their whereabout records to the health code system.

The system under real-name registration will require citizens upload their personal information including Hong Kong ID Card, address and health declaration.

The system will adopt the typical “green, yellow and red” three-tier classification to differentiate travellers by infection risks, after they sync their whereabout records from their LeaveHomeSafe app.

If they were found to have been to the same places at the same time as confirmed cases, their health code will appear as yellow and close contacts will have red codes.

Earlier on Tuesday, Secretary for Food and Health Sophia Chan Siu-chee said the government may require inbound travellers to stay longer at quarantine camps upon arrival to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, but added there’s no need to close the border completely at the moment.

She made the remarks after the government announced on Monday night that “as a preventative measure”, fully vaccinated Hong Kong residents returning from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Israel and Italy will also have to be isolated at Penny’s Bay for their first seven days of arrival before going to hotels from midnight Thursday.
