A budget of VND15 trillion (US$646 million) has so far been allocated to clear land for the Long Thanh International Airport project in the southern province of Dong Nai, according to a local official on Tuesday.

The Dong Nai government is prioritising site clearance to make room for two resettlement zones that will house residents affected by the project, Ho Van Ha, director of the provincial Department of Planning and Investment, told a press briefing on the province’s first half socioeconomic performance.

Also, the local government is working with the Dong Nai Rubber Corporation to clear the core site of the future airport. As a result, every hectare of the rubber plantation used for the project will receive VND600 million (US$25,800) in compensation.

Provincial authorities are holding weekly meetings to update the public on the progress of site clearance activities, Ha said.

He added that the central government has made two appropriations for site clearance, with one in late 2018 and the other in early 2019, which amounted toVND15 trillion out of the estimated VND23 trillion.

“Dong Nai Province is striving to shorten the investment preparation period to speed up the progress of site clearance for the Long Thanh airport,” he said.

The Dong Nai Land Fund Development centre is completing the necessary procedures to reclaim land owned by rubber firms and religious organisations, said Nguyen Ngoc Hung, deputy director of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

Speaking at a meeting with the local government earlier this month, deputy minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan urged Dong Nai to hand over cleared sites to the Ministry of Transport by mid-2020 so that work on the first phase of the big-ticket project can start on schedule.

The Long Thanh International Airport is designed to handle up to 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo per year once the three construction phases are complete.

Following the first phase, slated for completion by 2025, the airport will have one runway and one passenger terminal able to accommodate 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo per year.

The second runway and terminal will be built during the second phase to raise the airport’s annual capacity to 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo.

The project costs an estimated VND336.6 trillion, or $16.03 billion, with VND114.5 trillion assigned for the first phase, based on the 2014 exchange rate between the dong and the US dollar. trillion-for-airport-project percente2 percent80 percent99s-site-clearance.html
