Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, may not leave Malaysia as they are suspects in crimes here, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad explained today.

The prime minister also said that while there is not a complete ban against former government officials leaving the country, several individuals are currently under investigation for alleged wrongdoings.

“I am not sure how many will be restricted… not only Najib and Rosmah… the Immigration Department has been informed that there are those who are not allowed to fly out.

“Their passports have not been retracted… but if necessary, we will stop them from leaving,” he told reporters at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here.

When asked whether political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda was also barred from exiting the country, Dr Mahathir said the latter’s name was not discussed.

Abdul Razak, Najib’s former aide, had helped facilitate the purchase of two Scorpene-class submarines from the French warship builder DCN International in 2002, and was acquitted of abetting in the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.

On the whereabouts of Low Taek Jho or Jho Low, Dr Mahathir said authorities were aware of his location. Low has repeatedly been linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

“Leave it to us,” he said when asked how the tycoon would be brought back to Malaysia to answer for the 1MDB scandal.

“I don’t go around catching people. There are agencies tasked with catching people,” he said.
