Digital map to help ease the serious congestion in the capital. The Hanoi Department of Transport has submitted a project to the city’s People’s Committee on building a digital traffic map system to aid transport management and ease congestion.

The application of advances in scientific and information technology is essential given the frequent traffic jams in the city, according to the department. There is no standardised digital map in place, so related units use a variety of digital maps.

The map system will help drivers become aware of the traffic situation on their route and allow them to avoid traffic jams.

The system, which will cost VND2 billion ($86,700), will be located at the Hanoi Transport Management and Operation centre (TRAMOC) on Kim Ma Street in Ba Dinh district. It will use data from traffic cameras across the city to provide information on infrastructure and vehicle numbers.

It will also integrate other related information such as gas stations, medical centers, and tourist attractions, etc.

The map system will also include data on parking lots, bus stations, and drop-off and pick-up points for buses.

It will be built as a website and an app for mobile phones, providing useful information on traffic conditions in real time to help drivers identify the optimal route to reach their destination.

Earlier, the Ministry of Transport ordered authorities to accelerate the establishment of the digital transport map.

Hanoi now has over 8 million people and nearly 6.7 million vehicles, including over 5.7 million motorbikes and 740,000 motor cars, according to the latest data from the general Statistical Office and the Hanoi Police Department.
