Work on a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant, worth VND5 trillion (US$215 million), began in the outlying district of Cu Chi on October 16 as the second of its kind in HCM City, allowing the city to address both the waste problem and the demand for energy simultaneously.

Tam Sinh Nghia Investment and Development JSC started construction on the eight-hectare Tam Sinh Nghia WTE plant at the Tay Bac solid waste treatment complex in Cu Chi.

The plant, which is expected to be completed within a year and a half, will have a daily processing capacity of 2,000 tonnes of waste and generate 40 megawatts of electricity.

In the second phase, the plant will treat an additional 3,000 tonnes of waste daily, covering a total area of 20 hectares.

The company’s chair and general director, Ngo Xuan Tiec, was cited by the Vietnam News Agency as saying that the plant will employ German WTE technology that is popular in 40 countries.

The advantage of the technology lies in being able to operate on a closed chain from waste collection to the final discharge stage, so the plant will not spread unpleasant odors.

The city’s chair, Nguyen Thanh Phong, stated that construction had started on two WTE plants, including the first plant Vietstar. Also, measures are being introduced to treat household waste through modern technology to ensure environmental sanitation and utilise natural resources.

Phong noted that the WTE technology handles up to 90 percent-95 percent of the waste volume, eliminates the risk of water pollution and makes use of existing heat sources for the generation of electricity.

“Each day, the city has to treat more than 9,000 tonnes of household waste, not to mention industrial and medical waste,” he remarked.

He added that the city will construct another WTE plant later this year, raising the total daily processing capacity of current and future plants to over 7,000 tonnes of waste.

Since August this year, a $400 million WTE plant has been under construction at the Tay Bac solid waste treatment complex, funded by Vietstar JSC in Cu Chi. Slated for completion next year, it will treat 2,000 tonnes of waste per day, doubling to 4,000 tonnes a year later.
