HCM City will hold an international contest to choose the best design for an underground commercial centre at the Ben Thanh station of the city’s metro line No.1, which is still under construction.

According to the municipal government office, the city has assigned the Management Authority for Urban Railways of HCM City to draw up a plan to execute the underground commercial centre project.

The centre should be finished at the same time as metro line No. 1, which is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2021.

The Department of Planning and Architecture has been told to organise the contest. The underground commercial centre must be connected with surrounding streets, such as Le Loi, Ham Nghi, Dong Khoi and Nguyen Hue, as well as adjacent commercial centers.

In 2016, a Japanese company proposed developing an underground shopping centre linking the stations of metro line No. 1 in front of the Ben Thanh Market and the Opera House.

The centre, covering 45,420 square meters, will comprise an underground pedestrian street (21,620 square meters), a shopping, dining and entertainment complex (16,850 square meters) and other auxiliary works. The project was estimated to cost nearly VND8.4 trillion.
